The well-known Theravadin master Venerable Sujiva is coming the Bay Area from Europe to lead a 9-day vipassana retreat.
Vipassana, also known as insight meditation, is taught by the Buddha. Insight is differentiated from knowledge that involves thinking and conceptualization.
The emphasis is on insight because it is through this means that the Truth can be realized. The realization of three universal characteristics -- Impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non self -- radically removed defilements and puts an end to suffering, bringing eternal peace.

Introduction of Venerable Sujiva

Venerable Sujiva

donned the robes shortly after graduating from the University of Malaysia with an honor degree in Agricultural Science in 1975. During his monastic training, he practiced under several distinguished meditation masters, notably Ovadacariya Sayadaw U Pandita of Burma.
He has conducted countless vipassana retreats at Santisukharama hermitage in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia since 1982 and is well respected by his students for his compassion, skillful guidance, and deep understanding of the Buddha's teaching.
Another milestone in the development of his teaching of vipassana meditation occurred in 1996 when he began conducting retreats aboard, particularly in Australia. Since then, he has held numerous retreats in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Republic of Czech, Republic of Slovakia, Sweden, Italy, and the US, and Abhidhamma courses in the US and Hong Kong. He has been stationing in Italy since 2005.
His sharp discerning skills at times seemingly unconventional from the mainstream techniques, makes him a contemporary meditation master much sought after. He speaks English, Malaysian, Pali, Mandarin, Cantonese, Burmese, and Thai. He loves forest and nature, literature, painting, and photography.
He has authored a number of books, such as The Tree of Wisdom, the River of No Return: the Practice and Development on Insight Meditation, Meditation on Loving Kindness and Other Sublime States, The First Step to Insight Meditation, Essentials of Insight Meditation Practice: a Pragmatic Approach to Vipassana, Funny Monk's Tales; his collection of poems includes The Voices from the Heart, Walking Iris, Wind in the Forest.
