The Secret About Browsing Chinese HTML With Netscape Navigator
On US version of Windows 95 or NT
Introduction
There is a hidden feature in Netscape Navigator 3.x which allows you
to browse Chinese HTML on a US Windows 95 or NT 4.0. It also works with
Netscape Communicator 4.x. I have tried Traditional
Chinese (Big 5) successfully on NT 3.51 and NT4.0.
Follow the instructions exactly is important.
1. You need to download the FREE fonts from Microsoft:
If you are using Windows 95 or NT 4.0, skip to step
2.
1.1 Special Trick for NT 3.5 users:
The packages listed above is origional designed
for Windows 95 and NT 4.0. Edwin Kwan find a way to use them with Windows
NT 3.51. So, if you are using Windows NT 3.51, you need to do the following
special installing processes. If you are Win95 or NT 4.0 user, you just
need to run the normal installation process.
- Run "xxxxxx.exe" (or other exe listed
in the previous section) as usual. You can see it expand some TTF file.
- When the program stops saying that it won't complete
under NT 3.51, switch to File Manager and look for a new temporary directory
created by the installation program. (Don't click OK or Cancel when the
installation program compalin to you, just switch to File Manager in that
time. Otherwise, you won't find that temporary directory)
- Inside you will see one or two XXXX.TTF file.
I also took XXXX.NLS file.
- Copy the files in the temporary directory to
a different directory, say c:/IEFonts, then acknowledge the dialog box
and let it zap the temporary files.
- Install the font manually by going to Control
Panel/fonts/add....Specify the directory c:/IEFonts.
- Then you need to install the NLS file manually.
(See below)
1.1.1 If you try to install Traditional Chinese
Font:
- Copy "C_950.NLS" to the "system32"
directory.
- Run "REGEDT32" and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
- Under the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Nls/CodePage",
add a value "950: REG_SZ: C_950.NLS".
- Reboot.
1.1.2 If you try to install Simplified Chinese
Font:
- Copy "C_936.NLS" to the "system32"
directory.
- Run "REGEDT32" and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
- Under the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Nls/CodePage",
add a value "936: REG_SZ: C_936.NLS".
- Reboot.
2. You need to turn on the UseUnicodeFont flag by hand
2.1 For Window 95 users:
- Quit Netscape Navigator 3.0
- Run "regedit"
- Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER Window
- Goto Software:Netscape:Netscape Navigator:INTL
- Select Menu "Edit:New:String Value"
- Type: "UseUnicodeFont" at Name field (Type defaults to REG_SZ,
which is what we want)
- Type: "1" at Data field
- Launch Netscape Navigator 3.0 again
2.2 For Window NT users
- Quit Netscape Navigator 3.0
- run "regedt32"
- Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER Window
- Goto Software:Netscape:Netscape Navigator:INTL
- Select Menu "Edit:Add Value"
- Type: "UseUnicodeFont" at Value Name Field
- Type: "1" at string field
- Launch Netscape Navigator 3.0 again
3. Now, select the font from Netscape Navigator 3.0
- Select "General Preference" Menu Item under "Option"
Menu.
- Select the "Font" tab.
- Select the language you want to set font. For example, "Japanese"
- Click "Chose Font" for Propoption Font, select the font you
installed in step 1.
- Do the same thing for Fixed Font.
- Click OK to close the Font Preferences box. (Due to a bug in Netscape,
you need to close the Font Preference box every time you set up a font
for a particular language. )
Known Problems:
- The text inside HTML FORM SELECT and INPUT field won't work. Try to
use TwinBridge or UnionWay if you care...
